OP, go plant some of the spreading kind in your yard, and wait a few months, maybe a year. Then once it's taken over double or triple the space you ever imagined it could, and you have spent several years trying to remove it to no avail, then come back and tell us how crazy we are.

I managed to eradicate it from my yard, but it took me 5 years of hard effort. There's no easy way to be rid of it. And during that time, I couldn't expand my stone patio like I wanted to because I knew the bamboo would only pop up the stones because it's that strong. I never planted it - it invaded from outside my fence.

I am hoping that a stork will be one of the birds attracted by the bamboo, it that the stork will bring me a peaceful baby panda. I checked Wikipedia and it says that pandas don't eat children. Wikipedia is always right.

We live in a neighborhood built in several sections, from 1969-1972. Bamboo was used a cheap, easy-to-grow, fashionable alternative to a true privacy fence.

Forty years later, the bamboo has nearly taken over. The power company occasionally comes out and whacks away at errant sprouts/plants that are growing in the right-away, but then, it just grows back thicker.

It is nearly impossible to remove. I think you have to practically excavate the root system to eradicate the plants.

The good news is that bamboo will usually die after it flowers. You just have to wait for it to flower. (About 100 years or so...)

Are the leaves (not the stalks) the pandas eat difficult to grow? Thought I read that their food supply is dwindling in the wild.

I like bamboo because it is the primary food source for pandas. I would love to have a panda in my backyard. Maybe if I plant bamboo I can attract wild pandas to live in my yard as well as the birds.
