My rising 4th grader is currently in the 3 week summer camp and LOVES it. I have never seen him more engaged or happy about learning. Classes are small, students are there to learn, discipline problems are minimal and he's having alot of fun. I am so happy we found this summer program and we will be back next year.

Ask your child if he/she would be interested, however. That's the biggest driver as to whether its worth it. Does your DC like extra work, doesn't mind homework, is super curious and somewhat analytical? My other child does not care for homework or extra research -- and I don't think this program would be a good fit for him!!

We just had our soon to be 3rd grader take the SCAT. For that test, plus the yearly CTY registration it was $109. Obviously he didn't participate in the summer programs this year, but some of the fall one day/overnight programs look pretty cool. We'll see how he does on the SCAT to see if he qualifies for the summer 2014 programs.

Sorry, since OP's kid is entering 3rd, it should be WISC. Old WIPPSI scores from when he was 3/4 are too old.

They have their own test but you can get in using WIPPSI or WISC scores if you already have them.

Summer programs run from about $2500-$5000+

DC participated in some one-day courses that cost $100-200. We were turned off by the family vacations in exotic locales like China and the Galopagos that cost $5,000 or more. There are also summer camps and college counseling sessions that fall in between these price points.

I think it was about $700 for an online course (plus whatever the initial test fee was).

I was going to suggest that you do a search on "CTY" but PP beat me to it. There is a range of opinions on whether it's worth it, and letting the original posters speak rather than me trying to recap seems best. Our own experiences were mixed.

DC will start grade 3. I am wondering if it is worthwhile (money and time) to start him on CTY program now. Should I wait few years or is this the right time to get in. He is in 95 percentile of the tests. How much expenses should I expect for one year of CTY program? Please share your experiences.
