My DD participated in a summer camp one year at her MCPS school and I was very surprised at how there seemed to be no security.

There were lots of day camps and random people & workers in and out. That was DD's first and last time at a day camp held in an MCPS school. I did not feel at all good about it.

This was more than a case of "holding the door open". The nanny walked straight into the building and was pretty much given the run of the place!

As a teacher in an MCPS elementary school, I can tell you this would not be allowed in my school. I'm in often over the summer with few other staff members in the building and security rules are still followed. However, there are more County workers in the building who are not based at the school so the chances are greater in the summer of someone holding a door open for a stranger

To get in to our elem school - they buzz you in - and although the office folks can see you - they office isn't the very first thing you enter when you get there. you have to cross a large hallway to get there. it does make me wonder how secure this is. they could buzz in anyone and expect that person to come to the office to sign in. but that person could really go anywhere pretty quickly without heading to the office. they don't ask for your name or anything - just buzz you in.

Agree that you should bring it up with the principal. Very unlikely that that would have happened during the school year, but things can get lax in the summer. I wouldn't take it as indicative of how the school is run as a whole, but definitely give the principal a call or shoot an email about this.

1. Nanny is Black. Same race as me and my kid. Not like they were "stereotyping" that the ethnic or foreign woman is the nanny.

2. I was not requesting an escort, simply that it was a bit weird tht she was just sent into the building with free reign.

Like I said before, she did not get a visiting pass or anything. This time it was okay as It was just the nanny getting forms signed and leaving them in the office, but next time they could be (god forbid) letting in someone like the previous school shooters or kidnappers

Your school does not have a resource officer or five security guys during the summer.

I work in a high school, and with the exception of the door to enter the maintenance wing, the others are locked. But we have an resource officer and 5 security!

My kids' school is locked; you have to buzz in and enter through the main office to sign in.

Even so, any weirdo can come in and do harm. And how do you determine who looks "too weird" to enter?

Elementary school principal here (not MCPS). That was not okay. I'm wondering if the person in the office was not a regular staff member. That can happen in the summer sometimes. Definitely bring it to the attention of the principal. It's something I would want to know.

I had my nanny go to the school and drop off some forms. My DD is in the 8 years old and in the summer program at the school. The nanny told me that she took the forms to the office to submit, the person in the office then told her to go to the class room to have one form signed by the teacher.

At no point did my nanny have to sign in, get a visiting pass or have an escort around the building. I lived in Colorado and had kids in the PSS there, and if an unidentified woman came to the building it would be taken a little more seriously. Nanny said she had to go down 2 flights of stairs and then finally found the classroom.

I think that there should have been a little more scrutiny on the part of a random woman coming to a school with anything to do with a kid.
