As an aside, we have our Kinderzeat, which was the forerunner to the Tripp Trapp. Still use it.

You bought the natural chair, not the finished chair. That’s why it’s not glossy or finished. Google unfinished furniture and you’ll see the difference. Finished furniture has paint, stain, whatever on it to protect the wood and give it the aesthetic most people prefer. You bought unfinished which means you need to take care of it to protect the wood so it doesn’t dry you (ever had a wood cutting board or spoon that cracked? hello, I am trying to track down a 40th anniversary chair. If you still have yours I would be interested in purchasing it.

I just purchased a brand new Stokke Tripp Trapp chair that was on-sale. It is natural, matte finish. It came with a "wood oiling kit". The instructions are to oil before assembly (oops, just assembled it before opening this kit) -- run oil on with a cloth or brush, let sit for 15-20 minutes, then wipe off. Then wait 2 days for chair to dry before use. They also recommend oiling the chair every 6 months.

I guess my question is, how necessary is the oiling?

We previously purchased one of these chairs in excellent used condition for my oldest child, but there is a more glossy finish to it. Will oiling this matte finish chair put a gloss on it? The basic instruction manual for every Tripp Trapp chair does not mention oiling every six months as part of their recommended maintenance. Perhaps it is just the "matte finish, 40th anniversary chair" that requires it.
