Subbing and long term are huge. Principals want to hire known qualities. Also, we are always giving suggestions and helping the subs we like get hired at our school or others.

Good luck. Also, go introduce yourself to the principals at the nearby schools during summer hours. You'll make an impression and maybe get some advice.

This. I have been told from many teacher friends that you can apply to be a substitute teacher and if you are called, make sure to be available. Frequently positions are filled from those who have already taught in the local school district even if only as subs. If you don't get a job subbing, then try getting a job through tutoring or even a company that teaches classes for specific topics. Get any teaching experience you can and it will improve your chances when you apply.

In Fairfax County, you can apply in the early spring for an "early hire" contract. You apply online and have an interview with someone from Human Resources. If you score high enough on the interview, you can be offered a contract. Basically you're guaranteed a job. In early May, schools get the list of early hire candidates. You can set up interviews and get a match with a school.

Where are you trying to get hired? If you are willing to teach in a charter in DC then it is extremely easy to get hired.

Do you have friends who are teachers? Knowing someone is (fortunately or unfortunately) the easiest way to get in.

Meet with the principals of your target schools throughout the summer for an "informational" interview. If you aren't hired this school year you should sub.

Is there a better, more effective way for a teacher to network/look for available teaching positions without waiting until the end of the school year to see who quits?
