OP if you're zoned for a MoCo school in Takoma Park I think you're gonna be hard to please! These are good schools. If you're in PG, I'm not familiar with the schools so I have no idea.

Check Evergreen School again.....I think they DO have openings for a 5 year old....and they go through early elementary.

Grace might be a good fit. There are a number of Takoma Park families that go to Grace, so carpooling may even be an option. It is not a Montessori school, but the kids don't spend much time "in their seats doing worksheets". In K, there is lots of movement and activity, tons of outdoor time - multiple recesses per day, plus PE three times a week. The school has a strong emphasis on outdoor education. Just as an example, last year the 3s, preK, and K planted a vegetable garden, tended the garden during the year, then had a small farmer's market at the end of the school year. I'd look for a Montessori program that goes beyond K so you don't have to move him again. Maybe Paint Branch?

Thanks for the suggestions. We live on the Maryland side. Evergreen looked really good but they don't have any openings for K, already checked with them. I will check Franklin and broad branch in the morning. Any other thoughts? Thanks

What is your DC In-bounds school?
If it is the Takoma Education Campus, people are considering this for the lower grades.

Another option that is not too for is Sela - it is a new PCS and I believe there are openings for K.

I think you might have luck with a 5-6 year old in montessori schools as so many of them lose the older kids to elementary schools, but want older kids for the montessori method of mixed age classrooms. Try:

What was your school plan and where are you located?

We just moved to DC and had a school plan but after visiting I am having serious second thoughts. I have been trying to research private, independent and parochial schools but we are so busy with our new jobs and trying to set up our house so i thought this forum might offer some suggestions to help streamline the process. Ideally DS would go to a Montessori or Reggio Emilio inspired school since he's not the sit in your seat and do this worksheet type. He's extremely active and independent. If anyone knows of any schools with openings in kindergarten or advice of schools to avoid we would appreciate it. We live near Tacoma park and would prefer the school to not be too far as we both work full time. Thanks in advance.
