Why don't you do it right after work before dinner one time during a weekday, and one time on the weekend. Doing it 2x a week isn't bad considering your schedule.

We have 3 in daycare, and our schedule isn't too far off from yours. I run or bike home from work 2 days/week. (I actually metro to about 3 miles from home, and then run from there.) There's just no other way I can fit it in.

Good for you! I have a similar issue - DH leaves at 6 am so I am home with DS alone in the mornings. My day is slightly shorter than your's - I get home around 6 and DS goes to bed by 7:30. With the longer days this summer I've been walking and/or running (couch to 5k) in the evening. Also two days this week I got up at 5:30 and ran. It sucks but I'm determined to get in a little bit better shape. Not sure what I'll do when the days are shorter and it's frigging cold out at 5:30 am... cross that bridge when I get to it.

OP here; thanks for your responses!
I'm going to:
squeeze in short 15-minute workouts when I can at night and in the morning (jump rope, crunches, pushups, jumping jacks etc.)
keep a set of small dumbbells in my office and do a few reps during lunch or midafternoon when I am sluggish
do squats or lunges (with the baby in the carrier if necessary)
one morning a week, do a short yoga dvd
bike to/from the metro 1x week
go for one run in the morning or evening 1x week
try the 7 minute workout from NYT

you could prep for work and make your lunch the night before to free up a tiny bit of time in the morning. i would have a quick workout plan ready to go like the 7 minute workout, jumping rope or an intense 20-30 minute workout routine.
make your longer and intense workouts happen on the weekends.
find little things to do during your workday to add in but not get sweaty - sitting on a balance ball, ten pushups, 20 squats, etc. just a little something that can break up the mundane sitting at a desk all day.
do your kids have a nanny come to the house or go to daycare? if you could have a nanny come earlier to help you in the mornings, it might help free up some time.

I exercise after the kids go to bed a couple nights a week (and other days during the day, but I have a more flexible schedule than you). Yes, it's not ideal, but it's often the only time I can do it. It took a lot to get in the habit (that's usually when I just want to collapse on the couch) but now I actually look forward to it. Often I'll put kid #1 to bed then head out while DH finishes up with kid #2. Our kids are in bed by 8pm though. I tried early mornings, but that just doesn't work for me.

My second was 18 months before I really got back into a good exercise routine though. At six months he was still up a couple times a night and I was exhausted. I feel so much better now that I'm fitting it in, but it just wasn't feasible for awhile there. I posted something similar on DCUM at the time and got plenty of people telling me I was lazy subhuman for not finding the time to regularly exercise. Alas, daily exercise just wasn't in the cards then, but two years later I'm well on my way to running a marathon, so don't beat yourself up too much if working out has to be pushed to the back burner for awhile.

For now, I'd probably try something like the 7-minute workout that the NYT featured a few weeks ago, along the lines 10:50 suggests. You could do that either right when you wake up, or maybe just before lunch during the work week.

3. Exercise on weekends. If you exercise both weekend days, then you need only fit in 1-2 days of serious exercise during the week.

4. Exercise while you're watching TV in evening.

1. Wake up earlier. This may involve watching less TV and going to sleep a little earlier to compensate.

2. Use your commute as exercise. Bike or run. If the commute is too long or not safe, get creative. For example, you might join a gym 2-3 miles from your office, so that you can run from home to the gym in the morning, and shower at the gym before taking Metro to work.

Let your husband take full responsibility of bed time routine 3 nights a week. That's three hours found. Give home back those 3 hours on the weekend for his own hobbies etc. if he needs them.

Try squeezing in strength training during your work day. You don't have to get sweaty to exercise. Planks, squats, crunches, etc. Either that or get up at 5:15 and run. When the kids get older you can switch off doing the bedtime routine with your DH. One of you puts the kids down the other goes for a run. That's what we did for a long time but that didn't start until our youngest was closer to two and started sharing a room with his older brother (hence one bedtime ritual). GL!

Can you bike to work? Two birds!

Hoo boy. That's tough, OP.

Can you squeeze a fifteen minute something or other in instead of minor cleanup on either the morning end or the evening end? Something simple you can do in your living room like pushups, squats, & crunches?

It will be easier once your youngest is a bit older, so don't beat yourself up about not being able to get it in right now if you can't.

Six months PP with second baby. This is my schedule:
6:00 wake, feed baby, feed preschooler & help get ready for preschool, eat breakfast & make lunch, do minor cleanup around the house, get ready for work (husband helps with these tasks (except for cleanup))
8:15-9:00 commute
9:00-6:30 work (eat lunch at desk)
6:30-7:15 commute
7:15 eat dinner, play with kids
8:30 do bedtime routine
9:30 spend time with husband/ do minor cleanup/ watch tv/ work
10:30 bed

I can usually find time to work out during the weekends, but I don't know where to fit it in during the week. The baby is still waking up at night, so I am unlikely to get up any earlier to work out.

I can't really work out at lunch because I am an attorney and I am already squeezed trying to get my billable hours in. I sometimes take a short (15 min) walk but I don't have time to change/shower, etc.

Anyone else on a schedule like this? How do you find time to work out?

Thanks in advance for any tips!
