Where are you located? Montgomery County Road Runners (mcrrc.org) has a good schedule and if you join and pay the yearly fee most of the races are included.

Pacers sponsors several local races, you can find them on their website. You can also go to Active.com, which has a really comprehensive listing nationwide, but I find it a bit hard to navigate.

If you stop by a gym or running store, see about picking up a free magazine called "Competitor." It has the most comprehensive listing of local races, including biking, running and swimming. I belong to Washington Sports Club and always get one there at the entrance.
