You might check out Wyzant too. I'm a Mont. Co teacher and tutor with this company.

Peer2Peer Tutors is now Aristotle's Circle. My SIL knows the founder of the company. I have not used them for academics (no need yet), but I did use one to teach my daughter piano. My daughter enjoyed the lessons and said they were "fun". You can also use free tutors with NHS after school if that fits your child's schedule. I liked that the tutor came to my house. I find tutoring centers depressing, but that is just me.

I have used peer tutors from MoCo high school from a company called Peer2Peer tutors. I used 3 different tutors over a 5 year period. My kids liked that tutors were close in age and very familiar with material. Tutors have to be straight A students. We didn't need one last year but I think price was about $35 for package of hours. They came to our house very convenient. Good luck.

We have been using this math tutor once a week for about a year, and test scores went up significantly. She was a teacher for test prep at Kaplan Test Prep. She just seems to get how everything is connected. Would recommend, although she is not cheap... her email is

Go to
http://www.montgomeryschoolsmd.org/schools/rmhs/departments/math/

Click on the link to "MCPS Adult Tutors" on the right navigation bar...

These are MCPS Math tutors who will tutor students from other HS and MS.

I found that it is better to use MCPS tutors because they know the curriculum as well as what is coming down the pike...Summer is the time to sort out tutor situation...

We used Potomac Tutors. They do regular tutoring and MCPS exam prep sessions. We found them effective for math tutoring. Our school had a peer tutoring program during lunchtime last year but not sure how many kids used it. There is also an extensive tutor list maintained by the PTSA. Unlike PPs school ours does not have NHS so that was not an option.

Contact the math resource teacher at your local MCPS middle school, and he or she should be able to provide you with the names of MCPS teachers who tutor in Algebra (I think the teachers set their own rates but it seems that the average is about $50 per hour). Also, keep in mind that most MCPS high schools' National Honor Society offer "free" tutoring, particularly in math subjects, throughout the school year. Finally, I've also used a local Huntington Learning Center and found it to be pretty familiar with the MCPS curriculum; Huntington charges about $75 per hour for tutoring.

DS is starting HS in the fall. He is generally a good student with Algebra/Math being his weakest subject.

Does anyone know of any tutors who are familiar with the MCPS HS curriculum? Algebra would be the focus but we may need other areas also.
