Also $180 sounds low for department head.
If it is net salary, since many of their employees have no gross, that sounds accurate.

LOL

Clearly written by an employee.

Hee, the World Bank and any of their departments are very disorganized. The mangers don't mange and the workers don't work. I know three people who come in at 10am and leave at 4pm, yet they list working a full eight hours on their time sheet. Does their manager or HR care? NOPE.

World Bank culture seems to be unpleasant, but the big salaries and terrific benefits make it more palatable.

This job appears to be the worst of both worlds.

I guess that depends on the value you bring to the table and your other alternatives. But, yes, what we hear from you about that place makes it sound a bit fishy.

One of my neighbors is a department head at the World Bank making about 180 grans a year ... with an AA degree. He went from a tax guy at H&R to a top player in less than 10 years. People with PHD's in economics report to him.
He travels business/first class paid by the bank and the points he earns in a year is enough for him to go visit his family for free.
It's definitely a strange place.

Perhaps he's an exceptional people manager ? Also they don't fly first, just business. Also $180 sounds low for department head. I suspect your neighbor is bullshitting you on a few dimensions.

I got some more info, apparently it means working 12 hour days for a lame benefits package and crappy pay.

Well, world bank has great benefits and pay, so this is an odd statement.

oP, you probably won't be a good fit anywhere where you are expected to make intelligent, informed contributions.

If that staff member is retired WB, how would he know? Besides, nonprofits are not run uniformly. Sounds like bravado to me.

Ha! I report to a former world banker and I can tell you right now this group is run nothing like any department of the world bank. We are a totally unstructured, authoritarian regime here, the opposite of what I see at the world bank or IFC.

I would assume their comment vs a nonprofit means they want to be accountable for the money and seek sustainable return on donations, which many nonprofits do not. Gates foundation also big on ROI.

I am Looking for some advice regarding World Bank workplace culture. I have been offered a position in a small nonprofit that was founded by and largely staffed by retired World Bank employees.

One staff member stated that it runs more like the World Bank than a nonprofit.

I've only ever done nonprofit work, so I'm not sure what that means.

Any World Bank advice out there?
