Unless she's coming over to your house at 3 AM and filling your fridge with mustards, waking up your kids to force feed them Big Macs and soda, and flinging your laundry all over the place, what has anything got to do with you?

OP here. thanks for the laugh. seriously. I needed it.

I don't mean to come off as judging, I was just noticing our differences in parenting/life. that's all. She'd probably rather die than live like me. In no way are our "living" differences why we do not really care for one another, but rather, we just don't "mesh." She's nice, just not my type of friend. And I'm not hers. Period.

BTW... in a weird attempt to self improve, would any of you mind pointing out what sounded "superior" on my part? I'd like to think of us as being different, but if I'm coming off as superior here, maybe I'm coming off that way in person. I don't want to offend her in any way.

"cannot change them"

I'm very different from my in-laws, but the differences are cultural. I just avoid them like the plague. However, I don;t interfere with my DH and kids' relationships with the in-laws. When I have to be with them, I'm polite and respectful trying to model good behavior for my children. I cannot change the, but I can make my life easier.

We would not be friends if we were not family, but sometimes, I feel as if I'm being judged by her because I'm not as "free spirited" as she is. I know I should not really care, but I do. Here are some of our "lifestyle" differences.

She puts her kids to bed after 11pm.
I put my kids to bed at 8:15.

She gives her kids juice and soda.
Mine drink one juice/day and then water.

She rarely cooks.
I cook 4-5 times a week.

She has mounds of laundry waiting to be folded.
I fold and put away.

She gives her kids fast food regularly.
I do fast food as a last resort.

She goes out and comes home late (3-4am, MIL watches kids for her).
I do not go to bars or clubs (I'm 37... I just think I'm too old!)

Her fridge has (honestly) 4 open bottles of the same brand of mustard. 2 opened bottles of the same BBQ sauce and 3 opened jars of mayo. I just saw this tonight, so it is stuck in my brain. I just remember thinking "I would go crazy if I had all that opened shit in my refrigerator"

Luckily, I don't have to see her every day, but we live in very close proximity and I'm married to her brother, so we see each other enough. So, I'm wondering, is anyone else extremely different from their in-laws, and if so, how?

And P.S. I'm not looking for someone to tell me what an anal bitch I am. I already know that. I just want to know if anyone else has major differences with their in laws as well.

As long as you're not telling each other you think your way is best I think you can learn to get along?

Wow. You really judge on surface matters.

Unless she's demanding your kids stay up late for "family events" let it go, its her problem to deal with tired and cranky kids.

My SIL is a total bitch, she told me she hoped I ended up divorced at my engagement party, because she should have been the first sibling to get married. How dare her younger brother upstage her, and get married first!

So on my SIL scale you've got it pretty good girlfriend!

You are judging her based on how many jars of mustard she has in her fridge and how often she folds laundry. I'd rather be friends with her than you.

You seem to like to feel superior to her

BTW I can't stand my SIL, but I am not going to fret about how she lives her life.

+1. Yeah, just live your life. Tolerate her when you have to be around her.
