In my experiences, those who are in the upper brackets STAY THERE b/c they're "frugal." The showy ones have no clue how to manage their money. So they make a million, but half goes into a home that they can barely afford and huge SUVs they use to drive up and down Rockville Pike!

So I give your dad credit (to some extent). unlimited education spending? good deal! And I applaud the extravagant travel, too!

Totally agree! I am frugal but not miserly. Our lifestyle would bear this out. But we don't spend on frivolous stuff for the most part. I will not buy anything of any significance unless I research it and determine where I can get the best deal.

But we did spend liberally on the education of our children with the focus again on them getting the best education with the least dollars expended. What I mean by this is that an excellent state school is just as desirable as one of the prestigious universities. It worked because our children have all done well and earn excellent incomes. One falls in the category of netting around $35K a month and she still is watchful when it comes to how they spend their money.

Sure you can.

But those who make 35-50K a year will roll their eyes at you. And if you complain about living paycheck to paycheck on that much money per month it means you are living way above your means.

Our education spending is unlimited. DH and I used to buy more expensive items like I once bought a LV purse etc. Had furniture with custom fabrics. Now we are very frugal. Children in college and grad school-will owe zero. My least frugal child is working blue collar this summer. Learned more about money and life than in the prior fancy internships. Used to sound like OP.

Yes. Just because you can afford a Rolls Royce, that does not make mean it isn't pricey, right?

I do like his thinking on unlimited education spending. That makes you or anyone who benefits from it, very fortunate! Nothing more irritating that those pesky financial aid forms for school.
