I brought two interview outfits on my trip and kept note of which outfit I wore to which interview so if I got a second interview I could wear the other.

Before going on vacation I did a major purge at home, got quote from a national moving company (Bekins) and then got a job offer with two days left on my vacation. I immediately called into work, gave two weeks notice verbally, followed up with an email, called my landlord and gave notice, called the moving company and said "Yes, I want to take you up on that estimate! Can you pick up all my stuff on [day before I flew to Chicago]?"

Then I spent two days rushing around Chicago looking at apartments before finding one that could move me in five weeks later. Lived on my cousin's couch for three weeks in Chicago.

The key is you have to be ready to move fast, and you have to be willing to spend the money. If I'd had to live in a hotel for three weeks waiting for my apartment had I not had a cousin, I was prepared financially to do that.

Wow. Good for you!

Agree with 7:07. Dh just got a job in another city and he did something similar. He networked like crazy and then would tell people he was going to be in their city on X date, could he come in for a meeting? He also let the employers know that he didn't need a relo. This cost us a lot of money but it put him on a level playing field with local candidates. I also agree with the pp that if your firm has an office in the city you want to go to, you should try to transfer. Also, if your former firms have offices in your target city, contact your former colleagues for names to contact. You never know who has a friend who knows someone whose firm needs a paralegal. Good luck.

Does your biglaw firm have a sattelite office in your target metro area?

If so, perhaps the best way would be intra-firm transfer and then when you are in your chosen market, you can search as a 'local candidate'?

I am a paralegal that has worked for reputable big law firms, some with satellite offices around the country. I am planning to move away from DC to another major metro area next year and ofcourse would like to have a job lined up before I move.

How do people do this? Obviously, I doubt many firms would fly me in to interview in person since I'm not an attorney. Does anyone have any experience with a move like this? considering my occupation, how do I secure the job before the move?
