Maybe not Oxbridge unless your qualifications are fabulous, although I've heard of it happening from the DMV area. I do know kids from this year's Blair graduating class are going to Sciences Po and McGill. In past years they have gone to St Andrews, Edinburg and probably others although I'm not as familiar with other classes. Some foreign unis take lots of non-EU kids who pay higher tuition, sort of like US state universities who use OOS kids to help their budgets. I think Edinburg in particular has a reputation for taking Americans.

Are you DC or Maryland / Virginia?
Public or Private High School?

Schools recruit children from DC public schools (both DCPS and Charter). I know the current class from Latin did very well.

Sad and probably true. Works for us though. DD wants N or S Carolina or Florida. Any college in one of those states is currently on her list.

No chance of financial aid, but merit aid would be nice.

A number of southern schools have been making a big push for students from this area, following Duke's model, I think. For kids who are open to the idea of going south, some options to consider might be Davidson, Vanderbilt and Wake Forest.

Somewhat of a geographical diversity advantage at private schools in the mountain west and far west (Colorado College, Reed, Pomona and the other Claremont colleges), and if a DC resident do get the $10,000 break for UC schools and UW, both great state university systems. But there just aren't all that many private schools outside the northeast, near midwest and midatlantic region.

Its not a matter of the schools not wanting kids from our area, its that there are so many kids from our area pursuing college. This is in comparison to North Dakota which has a small population and an even smaller out-of-state college-bound population. So no, I can't imagine many schools actively seeking DC area kids. However, the University of North Dakota would probably think of your kid as a positive for their diversity.

I’ve sat through more than my share of tours where colleges talk about having students from every state “except North Dakota” or “except Alaska.” It makes me think that there would be a lot more options for DC if we lived in one of these remote areas. It seems that being from this area is not just a neutral factor, but actually at negative factor at some schools that are inundated with applications from this area. Does anyone know of any selective schools that are actively seeking to increase the number of students from the DMV area?
