Is ther anyone internally that you can talk to about this to gauge the possibility of going for the new job?

If it's professional protocol, then, yes, backing out would be a bad idea. If it's inconvenience, then that *might* be another story. Depends on a lot of factors you'd have to weigh.

All of that said, can you turn the less-desirable job into an ideal job?

I will discuss with people, but I don't think there is anything I can do now.

I think it would be violating professional protocol. The HR departments have begun working on the transfer, the new boss is expecting me to start, etc. It is an organization where people stay a long time so annoying people would probably not be a good idea.

The job I accepted is very different from the one that has just been advertized. I think I just need to suck it up now. It will only be for a few years. I just have this awful gnawing feeling that if I had turned down the crappy job and applied for the good one my life would have taken a very different turn...

You should always look out for yourself. Try to get your dream job. You'll perform better in it than in the crappy job. Nothing's worse than receiving a poor review in a crappy job.

Who do you want to make unhappy, yourself or others?

At my organization we need to move departments every few years. My time was coming near, so I just accepted a pretty crappy job that I had been offered. Two weeks later my dream job has just been advertized, but I don't think I can apply because I have just accepted the crappy job and couldn't back out without making a lot of people angry.

Not much I can do, I guess, but suck it up.
