Insruance rates vary based on how much you drive per year. Drop to the lowest tier.

The exact options will vary by insurance provider, but you should be able to temporarily switch to much cheaper no-driving coverage. I have penny-pinching friends who will do this even for a week's vacation. You still want the car to be covered in case of theft or malfunction (a friend's car had an engine fire while just sitting untouched during a semester abroad...). Also ask how quickly full coverage can be reinstated, if you're worried about unplanned trips home.

Check with the DMV. Isn't it the law in Maryland that you can't have tags on an uninsured vehicle?

My neighbor does this with his car when his daughter goes away to college. He reactivates it when she comes home for summers and breaks. Not sure it works for a primary on the insurance though.

DH and i are going out of town for 5 months- DH will be working on a ship and therefore not driving at all. I will have the freedm to leave and go back home.

I found myself wondering if I could remove him from or somehow "freeze" his coverage for car insurance for the duration of that time.Since its impossible for him to drive, why should he have to be insured for driving?

On the other hand, I can see the point that if there was an emergency and he had to leave and then drive a vehicle, he would be uniinsured.

Before I go calling the insurance company to ask this question, I figured someone here might have done a long term travel where this issue might have come up.

Thanks!
