Pp, if a child favors one side, first talk to your pediatrician.

This could be related to several things.

Vision issue
Motor coordination issue
Balance issue--go to an ent for spin test
Hip dysplasia

OP,

I don't think it's anything to worry about overall. I would think about seeing an OT (Occupational Therapist). Your kid might have issues with bilateral movement.

I figure it's just the kind of thing that will even out as she gets more physically skilled. Kind of like how they only roll in one direction for a while, etc...

I bet your boy will be fine, and a year from now will have generated seventeen other things to worry about! (I feel like my true full time job is talking myself out of seeing symptoms of a neurological disease, autism, stupidity, brattishness, etc... )

OP here. That's exactly how his is - his right side definitely moves faster and drives most of the motion. You're probably right, and like you said, I probably need to talk myself out of worrying about it!

Mine does too! He walks fine as well but when he runs one half of his body is decidedly forward. He also swings that arm ALL THE TIME. He's 19 months.

Do you only notice it when he's running? Does he favor one side while doing other activities?

It may be nothing. Or it may be something. If you are concerned, it wouldn't hurt to get it checked out.

A friend of mine's son had severe torticollis since infancy and when he began walking he led with one side while the other side remained stiff. They finally figured out it was a benign cyst which was pressing on a couple of cranial nerves.

Haha that's funny. You guys are making me feel better. Sometimes with these things you just don't know whether it's something to worry about or not - I just hate to have someone tell me when he's 5 that I should have had him looked at years ago!

I don't know for sure, but my son is the same age and has a really funny run. It's kind of like bobbing along with his knees a little straighter than they should be. His top half moves way more than his bottom half. I've never thought twice about it. I'm sure it's fine!

Has anyone experienced this? Trying to decide if it's time to take him to a specialist. He's 27 months now and he appears to walk normally. However, when he runs, he very clearly favors one side. He has a very cute lopsided run where his right arm is moving and his left arm is pretty straight to keep balance.

When he was younger, one of his feet turned pretty obviously inward when he started walking, and our pediatrician referred us to a specialist at Georgetown. I think he was only 16 mos at that time and the specialist looked at him for a total of 1 minute and said (very confidently, I should add) that the only issue was that my son was turned a certain way in the womb which caused one foot to turn inward, and that it would sort itself out very quickly once he started walking more. Sure enough, we saw a pretty obvious change within a month or two. However, now that he's running I'm getting concerned again. He seems to get by okay but he's definitely slower than the other kids his age.

I've tried searching the web for "uneven gait," etc but very few websites talk about this (and if they do, they usually attribute it to an injury on the one side which is causing them to use the other side more). I don't think he has an injury.

Anyone experienced this? Do you think I should give it more time to sort itself out or should I be worried about a developmental problem at this point? Does anyone know of a good specialist for this? Hesitant to waste time seeing the same guy at Georgetown again.

TIA!
