I think the OP is concerned b/d they poison everything from infant formula to dog food--so what they do to a chestnut is unclear

What quantity of water chestnuts is OP eating? I'm careful about food like rice or apples that I eat all the time, but I really don't think the occasional water chestnut is worth worrying about.

Right? I mean what's a little bit of ingested poison now and then really matter?

Would jicama work as a substitute? Or maybe young white turnips that the farmers markets have now? Just spitballing here.

Hmm, then you should know that water chestnuts are not same as chestnuts.

Fresh water chestnuts are sold in asian stores. I don’t think those are imported from china, like all the other fresh veggies they have, they are most likely grown in US.

Harris Teeter sells a store brand of water chestnuts. I'll check the label next time I go there.

I'm looking for the same thing (also in the DC metro area). On Amazon I found one brand that said "China or Thailand" as country of origin. So I plan to look in Thai grocery stores.

I'm sure you could probably find some hydroponically grown ones online.

Any recommendations for brands/stores that sell non-Chinese grown/packaged water chestnuts? Thanks.
