Just because you are in the helping profession doesn't mean one takes an oath of poverty. To be a well-off social worker doesn't mean you've compromised your ideals and quest to help others.

I cannot imagine being able to afford living alone in this area on a social worker's salary. You have to live with roommates or a spouse/partner.

Married well. Teachers in MD actually make more than most social workers and have better benefits. Teachers get housing and other perks that social workers don't get. Otherwise you live in shared housing, with family or really far out.
