I'm another USAA customer. I love banking with them. It's so easy. I rent a safe deposit box at my local Suntrust for $85 a year. I open their lowest balance required account without a fee so I can get the box. Plus it's handy if I need to get a cashiers check.

Like others have said, open the new account and slowly transition your auto pay to the new account. It may take months but then your are done.

I deposit my physical checks through their app on my phone or through my scanner. I have their deposit envelopes for checks that are harder to scan (rebate checks). I order the basic checks through them and they are free, which is nice. I've been using them for probably 10 yrs and don't even miss having a brick and mortar building. And as the PP mentioned, they reimburse you for ATM fees (I think 10 a month). I try to use ATMs that don't charge fees anyway to keep the costs down.

Pretty easy to change banks, really. Take a gun with you.

I don't know. I too loved Chevy Chase Bank, and by and large Capital One has been OK. It's especially convenient to have Cap One ATMs everywhere, which Chevy Chase started. Switching would kind of be a devil you know vs. devil you don't thing for me.

We are considering USAA, or possibly PNC. If we got USAA, I don't know what we'd do about a safe deposit box, CapOne only lets you rent a box if you have an account there.

I've been a very happy USAA customer for years. If you can get the safe-deposit box piece ironed out, I definitely recommend them. For years they have rebated the fees that you have had to pay to use ATMs at other banks, but now that there are so many USAA ATMs at CVS, you don't even have to worry about that part. You can also make USAA withdrawals free from PNC's machines.

I think that if you do it over, say, a month, you can take care of any automatic debits/deposits that you have coming in.

I'm a little shocked at the details of this thread. I switched AWAY from Bank of America TO ING, which just became Capitol One 360 (an online bank) and I really love it.

I was about to post in this thread saying it's really easy to switch banks and the new bank helps you out to do that, but my jaw dropped at all the people saying they dislike Capitol One. What don't I know?

I was just in Wells Fargo to cash a check because it was more convenient to my location. They were so helpful, quick, and appear to offer some benefits that Capital One doesn't. Mobile deposit is big on my list and I can't believe Capital One doesn't offer this.

I have a basic checking account and they have tried to upgrade me to an awards account too. I wasnt aware of a fee on the regular checking account.

OP here, if your balance dips below $300, they will charge you $8.95/month. We keep a minimum in that account and do not want to have to keep anything extra in there. It's the principle !!! When it was Chevy Chase, as long as we had our paychecks deposited directly, it was completely free.

Thank you for this information! I was not aware and will need to review statements. I also keep a minimum and will definitely plan on switching.

Yes, definitely check your statements!

I can't say that I'm overly happy with Capital One. I loved Chevy Chase. I'm thinking of switching to Sandy Spring.

Open a new account and keep the old account open for a few months until you're sure all auto payments are going via the new account.

Not really a huge deal, imo. Well, it depends on how many things you have set to auto-deduct from your account. Or how many accounts you have verified to transfer in/out. We did this a few years ago to switch from BoA to my husbands credit union. Mainly you will just both have to switch your direct deposits by fillings out forms through your employers.

We did it gradually as we were not in a hurry.

Why do you want to switch from that particular bank? Do you know what bank you want to move to?

I am also at Capital One and I also would like to switch. I'm definitely worried about the process, especially with all my auto payments and such. I think the best thing to do will be to keep the old account open for a few months to make sure you have changes all those payments etc.

We are currently at Capital One. We've wanted to switch banks for a while, but it seems like such a complex process, that we haven't done anything about it. My husband and I both have direct deposit.

Please let me know if you've switched banks recently, and let me know how the process went.
Thanks in advance!
