I have worked in a couple health departments in my time and believe that's where my heart is as well. I am currently in the private sector and looking to possibly get out, but I must say that it will be tough to get into certain LHDs because of the extreme constraints on budgets. I often see many postings for the VA State Dept of Health in Richmond (not sure if you're willing to relocate) and I'm not sure if that's a good or bad sign.

PHEC is an absolute must for any public health job seeker, check it out ASAP. I also like to go directly to the county health dept's website (e.g., Arlington, Montgomery, Fairfax - depending where you wish to work and where you live) and see what they have listed there.

I've been underemployed for 5 years now OP and am 57 years old. I've applied to tons of jobs and am just not getting anything else. Good luck! I hope you find something good.

dchr.dc.gov had some postings for the DC DOH recently. Definitely check out Idealist as well.

Have you used Public Health Employment Connection by Emory University, and publichealthjobs.net which is run by ASPH? There's also the APHA "CareerMart" but I have rarely found anything on there. PHEC however is a great site, I have found a couple of my previous positions from there.

6 months in 2010 and I took a 10% pay cut. In the end, I only found my current job through a personal (not even a professional) referral. This was someone I knew from a social activity who had a job that I qualified for. All of the jobs that I had applied for without the networking tie were a bust.

DH took about 3 months but he has a PhD in a highly marketable field. We did have to relocate to his new job site. It took me about a year to find a job in the same area.

If you are able move for work I would strongly encourage you to really expand the geography of your search.

How long did it take you to find another one? I'm going on 6 months after getting laid off and it feels like I'll never get another job, ugh!
