We adopted from Lucky Dog. We were very happy with them. We also support the Washington Animal Rescue League. The only reason we didn't try adopting from them is that we wanted a Lab/Lab mix puppy and they didn't have any puppies at the time we wanted to adopt. We went to a Lucky Dog adoption fair, met our pup, fell in love and the rest is history.

One suggestion, OP: once you've identified a dog you're interested in, but before you've made a committment to adopt him/her, you can ask a dog trainer to come with you to evaluate the dog. You'll have to pay the trainer, of course, but you'll get expert advice for your money. To find a trainer, ask neighbors or call a nearby vet.

Best of luck with your pooch!

Good idea. Also, the NoVA SPCA gives you a two week trial period before the adoption is finalized.

What kind of dog are you thinking of? Most rescues are breed specific. We just went on petfinder.org and found some dogs we were interested in, then contacted the rescues that had them. I think most are legit.

Anyone have any suggestions? We thinking about getting a dog in August. Are some of these rescue places scams or most legit?
