Thanks so much everyone OP here. It does help to hear from folks who went to camps themselves as this is new to me. He did not show strep on quick test so it is likely viral. He is sleeping in the infirmary and they said they will call me again in the morning.

When I was sick in the infirmary at overnight camp I remember getting extra treats like popsicles and there was even a TV. I'm not sure what they do at your DC's camp, but this is not anything new for them and they will take good care of him. With strep he's not contagious after 24hours of antibiotics so they'll probably send him back to his bunk.

I got really sick at sleep away camp - some kind of fever bug. I was put in the infirmary. I remember being bored more than anything else.

Ask them to have him call you.

When I was around 11 I have strep at sleep away camp. We lived near NYC and the camp was In Maine. I remember having to sleep in the infirmary for a few days until the antibiotic started working and I was allowed to return to my bunk. That was many years ago and it was fine. I think the camp sounds like they are acting very responsibly. I'm sure they won't mind if you call them for an update, but I wouldn't be too worried. I'm sure your DC will be fine. A care package sounds like a great idea.

OP, my children (9 & 12) are both at sleep away camp, and I myself went to one for 10 years as a kid. I remember an infirmary stay in one of those years. It is not a bad memory. I too would be a bit anxious if I got this call too but, I swear to you, it will be fine. His counselors and cabin mates will likely do something special for him.

OP here. No plans on flying there. Just hope he is made comfortable while he gets better. This camp has kids from all over and i am sure calling me is just protocol before taking off site to see a doctor. Not a helicopter mom at all but just like to make sure he is comfortable.

I'm sure they know what they are doing. Kids sometimes get sick and an overnight camp with a lot of kids I'm sure has a lot of experiencemanaging kids with colds, strep, etc.

Don't worry! He will be better soon and back to enjoying camp.

Do NOT get on a plane for strep. That is a complete over-reaction. He will be fine a few days.

Thanks. I will definitely be calm. My heart did jump a bit when i first picked up the phone when i first thought of injury. He will be fine. My other ds is camping out tonight while we may get tornadoes. Likely i should worry about him instead

It's strep. They'll give him an antibiotic and he'll take it easy for a few days. Don't worry.

I worked as a camp counselor at an overnight camp. Even in a fairly rural area in the midwest we had access to excellent medical care. Our health center was staffed with nurses and we had a doctor on staff who was always on call. It's not the same as "mom" but as a counselor we took great care of your kids and I expect your kid's counselors and the camp nurses will do the same!

Send him a care package and stay calm on the phone.

sounds like a run of the mill viral thing that they are on top of completely. No ambulance or crazy accident with a broken leg or head injury. He will be just fine. If need be they I'm sure would get him to a local hospital for precaution that would take care of him. There are several things going around right now, keep calm on the phone so he does too.

Ds has 102 fever and possibly strep. They are taking him to local clinic. Now waiting to hear. He is at least 6 states away. They will take care of him, right? Even when they are 11 you still want to be there for sick, feverish". I keep wondering if they will have him shower and take motrin. Had not anticipated this could happen. He is on day 5 of a 4 week stay.
