Op, we cannot answer without knowing your financial picture. i can tell you I almost certainly would buy more and pay for it by decreasing coverage to 20 years.

I'm a 37yo healthy male and I pay around $500/year for $1mln in coverage, 15-year term life.

I got mine via Geico, and they basically are a broker and bid it out to various insurance companies.

FEGLI for a healthy person is usually a bad deal.

$900k doesn't seem like enough to cover two kids for 18+ years.

huh? How can you say this without knowing her husband's income? FEGLI is pinned to both. And she can get coverage under it for a pittance.

No, FEGLI costs 15 cents per thousand per pay period. The amounts of coverage are pinned to salary, but not the cost. And you can only increase FEGLI coverage incrementaly. The birth of a child will allow you one year's salary in additional coverage. OP's USAA quote is a way better deal for every reason I mentioned above.

Not OP, but FEGLI costs 15 cents per thousand coverage, per two week pay period. Effectively more than twice the USAA quote.

You need to be covered, too! What would it cost to replace your work (childcare, cooking, cleaning, driving) over the next 18 years? I agree that this may not be feasible while pregnant, but it's an important thing to do for your husband and kids.

I got a $500K life insurance policy while I was pregnant, so it is certainly not impossible.

Ditto. In the event of your death, you don't want your husband to marry the first hoochie mama who comes along.

More life insurance coverage gives your husband more options after your death.

It's also not portable, if you leave federal service you have to buy a "conversion policy" from a private company that will determine the cost, based on age and risk class at that time.

Another FEGLI downside is you lose it after 13 months in Leave Without Pay status. So FEGLI is great if a piano falls on your head, but death following long, debilitating illness is effectively uninsured. It's not the deal people make it out to be.

Food for thought, after you deliver, you should also get a policy for yourself.

You need to consider that if you passed away, paid childcare would be a new line item on the family's budget. Families with SAHMs sometimes forget this, and if they are just making ends meet while not paying for childcare, this can be a problem if the SAHM passes.

Seems very reasonable indeed.

We are shopping for a life insurance policy for my DH. We are expecting our first children (twins) and I'll be staying home, so for now we are just looking for a policy to cover DH. DH is 42 and in good health. We were quoted about $115/mo for a 25 year term policy for 900K in coverage. Does this seem reasonable or should I shop around? This was with USAA. Thanks for any suggestions.
