Depending where you live, county building codes may not require a fence, in some, as long as the yard is fenced all the way around, that can meet code as well.
I live on 30 acres and my county does not require a pool to be fenced.
We are able to obtain insurance.

Why don't you make your offer contingent upon them installing a proper fence?

We made an offer on a home this morning with the same situation. Were you able to find an insurance company that would write the policy? I tried to contact the current insurance company, but I was unable tor reach anyone. I think it is a company that writes for lender enforced policies. I'm not sure how that works. I know if you don't pay your premiums the lender will add it for you. I wonder if this was the case? At any rate, if the contract is accepted we will need a policy until the house closes.

I had insurance through Chubb a few years ago when I could not get it through some more traditional insurance providers.

Chubb does some high end properties and may be someone you can work with.

You know, OP, why didn't you just say that you were buying a house with a pool? I'm not much of an OMGWTF person, but that is a much different scenario than your original post suggested. Sure, we all assumed, but would it have been so hard to clarify?

I'd ask the current owners who they have and continue that coverage, planning for a fence company to be on site the day after settlement.

Many unfenced pools in our area--5+ acre lots. We have an insurance rider for h pool and pool house separate from the house as do most in our area. I imagine distance to neighboring homes makes a distance on insurance. Ck the major insurers.

Whatever the underwriting risks are proced, I'd expect the insurance company to tack on a couple grand because the homeowners are idiots. That's gotta increase the risk of claims, right?

I would be shocked if anyone in the United States was able to carry insurance on an unfenced pool. I have seen that situation a few times in European rural areas.

Is your unfenced pool in the wilderness or something? What US municipality has a code that lets a homeowner choose whether or not the homeowner wants to protect a young child from helplessly stumbling into an untended pool? I'm curious.

Leaving aside the question of whether you must or should fence in a pool, does anyone have experience obtaining homeowners insurance for a pool with no fence? Assume no legal requirement due to grandfathering.

If you do have experience, can you please recommend your insurer?
