Have read and heard wonderful things about Polyface farm. They're somewhere in central Virginia, but they have dropoff locations around the metro area at certain hours on certain weekdays. Apparently in addition to being wonderful (pasture-raised, etc.) it's also affordable. But with the hassle of finding and connecting with one of their deliveries, we haven't gotten around to trying it yet.

Not 100% sure, but I think my husband bought some Polyface meat at Union Market in NE DC.

If you haven't read the Polyface chapter in Michael Pollan's "Omnivore Dilemma," it's worth checking out.

How much is Costco? Whole Foods sometimes has it on sale for $2.50/lb.

And BTW you're right to avoid Perdue. Good for you.

No one has compared prices on organic chicken? I'm thinking that the farms, as good as they are, are probably not less expensive than Costco. I'd love to be wrong.

Just buy directly from the farmer (not at a market where they are charging a premium for travel, time away from the farm, and kitsch factor). Look at Fields of Athenry Farm and Dawson's Gap Farm. Both have really great chicken.

We've been buying our organic chicken (boneless thighs/breasts and whole chicken) at Costco. MOMs is more expensive. I'm not comfortable that the Perdue hormone/antibiotic free is as healthy as they make it sound, but I welcome input on this. The chicken I've seen at the farmers market is pretty pricey, though I would love to support the little guys.

Has anyone price compared and found better prices than Costco?
