I just live nearby , but fyi, there was a murder close to the new location, around Memorial Day. It's shaken up the neighborhood quite a bit.

Could you clarify - what isn't diverse? And do you mean the neighborhood isn't desirable? It seems pretty nice to me. No it's not MY neighborhood, but then I don't want a 600 person school in my neighborhood. I don't understand your negatives really.

I did the bulding tour and am really excited about the new facility. The older section of the school has some amazing features that they are able to keep and use. The field is huge, now all we need is the money for a gym.

I think the new facility will be great. It was important for Latin to find a home with space for outdoor sports. There will be a brand new library, beautiful college counseling suite, and hopefully a new gym.

They are committed to making it easy for kids to get there so will continue bus service from Tenleytown and Eastern Market and Union Station vicinity on the Hill. It is also walkable from the Fort Toten stop on the Red Line. I haven't done the walk myself - not sure how long it will take.

The neighborhood seems like a pleasant middle class semi-urban neighborhood with single-family homes.

The waitlist for 5th had 140 kids on it. I heard that in May they had moved down 15-20 spots.

We have several friends with children in fourth grade this year, and what we are seeing is that Latin has a long waiting list and it appears many kids will not clear the waiting list for 5th and 6th grades. But the list is moving and so there is a good chance that many kids will get in. I would guess that going forward Latin will not be able to accommodate everyone - at least for a few years.

Also, as a BASIS parent, I think that Latin is a great program and would not assert (as the PP did) that one program is superior to the other. I think each family needs to consider their own situation and prioritize what is important to them. I think both schools are strong and can be great experiences. In our case the math program at BASIS and its emphasis on organization, plus its location, were deciding factors in choosing BASIS. But Latin might be a good match for one of our other kids - we just need to see how things play out. When we consider the dismay we felt a few years ago about the dearth of middle school options, and when we see great in Latin and BASIS today, we feel lucky.

Apply for 5th and you have a better shot.

How hard is it to get into these days. My son is in 3rd grade so looking in another year, but worried it might not be an option if it's gotten too competitive to get in.
