August is usually slow (in most fields) so I doubt it will be a problem. I would mention only once you have the offer. Also, think about whether you want to take it as unpaid time off or go negative into your vacation time if you do have to start before your vacation.

When and how do I mention this?

When you receive an offer letter. Then you can mention you have previously scheduled vacation for August n - n and what would work best for the employer as to your start date.

I know several people who have been in this position and it has never, ever been a problem for them to take the vacation (either negotiating a later start date or just taking unpaid vacation time).

Don't get into it until you have an offer.

I just went through this. When the offer was made, I was asked if I wanted to start on the 16th or 30th of June. However, I had booked a long vacation 6 months prior, starting at the end of the month about. I told them of my vacation plans when I was made the offer, and we negotiated a start date after my return (so mid-July).

As you are in the second round it will still be a while until you would actually start. You can negotiate start date after you have the job offer. Give your start date for when you return from vacation. Don't mention vacation- just say you can't start until then.

That's a very long vacation at the beginning of a job. I would try to start at the new job after you return, but be prepared for that not to go over well. Certainly you should be even more prepared than usual to hit the ground running. If you leave for 2.5 weeks just after starting, or if you delay your start date by a really long time, you'll have almost no room for error.

Thats a long vacation. Were you thinking of starting the new job after your vacation ends?

I'm in the second round of interviews for several jobs. However, I have 2.5 weeks of vacation planned and paid for during the final weeks of August.
