High maintenance is when your focus on maintaining your appearance inhibits you from fully participating in life, causes arguments and/or demands special exceptions. I detest women like this.
I love sexy high heels, but I'm not wearing those to my kids baseball game. I think my new hairstyle is flattering a nice change, but somedays, it's easier to put it in a ponytail. I wear light makeup every day, but when I go camping next weekend, I'd feel ridiculous to pack all of that!
Wearing high heels to a baseball game or bringing eye shadow on a camping trip do NOT automatically make someone high maintenance. It's about making demands on everyone around you to meet your needs. IF you wear the high heels to the game, but then complain the whole time that you now have mud on them, you're high maintenance. But if you wear the heels and have lovely time while you cheer your kid on, chat with the parents and pass out juice boxes with a smile, you're simply a nice lady.
High maintenance women can just as easily be found in Birkenstocks and no make-up.
