You have to replace the carpet. The smell is in the padding, underneath the carpet and will never leave.

linoleum is ghetto and trashy use at least ceramic

Real linoleum is not trashy. Vinyl would be questionable. Look for battleship linoleum

Use steam cleaner and mop to to dry the water and clean the stains from the carpet. Yeah, I agree neutralizing odor is really a daunting task but smart work can lead you to success. When all the water is gone, then just follow these steps to ensure clean and warm carpet.

Yes, if this doesn't work, definitely get a new carpet.

For me, having BTDT, I would get rid of the carpet. The smell is mold. Even if you get rid of the smell, the mold is still there. When carpet gets wet, you have to immediately get rid of the water before mold has a chance to grow. That usually involves a heavy duty shop vac, big fans running 24/7 and big de-humidifiers. Best case scenario is that the mold is in the padding. You might try replacing it but you should be prepared to replace the carpet or live with it knowing there's mold in it.

Yeah, I do to ow what's going on with that. But I shampoo the carpet with regular cleaner AND Simple Solution, a pet stain cleaner. It really works. Keep the dehumidifier running though. It has to get completely dry.

Not the OP, but having the same problem.
I would assume there is some mold or mildew, but I'd like to hear from others that have BTDT.

Our basement flooded from the storm a couple of days ago and now it stinks something awful. We have a dehumidifier running non-stop but nothing seems to help. Any advice?
