Won't happen. It's too late to announce an early dismissal because of bus routes.

I just heard that PG County schools and Frederick County schools are closing early. What does that mean for MCPS? After all we're in between the other locations, right?

That may be true, but asking whether people think it's possible that schools will close early is hardly "obsessing". As a working parent, working at a site an hour from my child's school, I need to have a back up plan in the morning if I think school's going to close. So knowing if I should be calling my mother to ask her if she might be able to pick up, or asking my boss now about telework for the afternoon in case I need to leave quickly, is helpful.

In addition, today is the promotion ceremony for my oldest child's middle school, an event that will be cancelled in case of an early closing. We've got relatives traveling a distance to be there, so I need to decide whether to encourage them to come early and leave a key under the mat, or to delay a little and check WTOP.

None of this is "obsessing", it's "planning", which is part of parenting.

Brava, Mama! I feel ya. There's always so much planning/strategizing and well, worrying on a sunny day, most especially when you are an hour away from home. Doesn't help that every news source scares us into preparing for every emergency possible; tornado, floods, derecho, power outage, lockdowns...

It all feels like a house of cards sometimes. ( and I am a SAHM).

In Bethesda here. Skys just went from normal to very dark (think 9pm level darkness). Was feeling ok about the weather and now I'm not so sure.

The thoughts are that your children are safer in a school bus or at school than at your house. Calm down.

I'm having trouble believing that someone thinks my child is safer walking home from the bus stop than he would be inside a building. Our school community lost a student this week who was killed by a falling tree in Monday's storm, so this danger is on many people's minds,

Whose thoughts are those thoughts?

OP, I know (because this has happened) that if the weather gets bad while the children are on the school bus, the school bus driver is supposed to go somewhere for the children take shelter there. (The "somewhere" includes the nearest school, but may also include other kinds of buildings -- I don't know.) And if the weather gets bad at dismissal, the school holds the children.

According to Weather.com, strong storms are expected only between 4 and 6pm. However, it may well rain before that. I suspect the schools will NOT close early, but I could be wrong.
