If schools aren't an issue, i'd buy in Alexandria - you can generally get more house/land for your money. There are some really nice neighborhoods. I'd also probably look at South Arlington - it's generally a quicker commute into DC and again, some nice neighborhoods at cheaper prices than North Arlington. Beverly Hills and Rosemont are nice in Alexandria; in Arlington, maybe Arlington Ridge and Aurora Hills.

I've lived in both, and if schools are not an issue, Alexandria. With three teenagers, you'd have to have a big pile of money or be willing to live very close together to live in Old Town, but there are nice bigger houses on the other side of the King Street metro that are walkable to the metro and Old Town. I like Del Ray, as well, if you want a walkable neighborhood.

Without having to factor schools, check out Beverly Hills/Rosemont in Alexandria. Beautiful neighborhood with old well kept homes.

if schools are not an issue, i'd choose alexandria, assuming you get into Del Ray/Rosemont/Old Town/Braddock Heights.

Moving from upper, western Montgomery County, MD. Want to find proper balance between a downtown feel and a suburban neighborhood. We've lived in a suburban - almost rural - area for 20 years. Ready to move closer in. Which do you prefer and why? We're a family of five with teenagers. Kids go to school in DC so schools local schools not an issue.
