Barnard has moved two slots only and had in boundary kids wait listed. I was low teens but now it's likely I will not get in...

Not familiar with West, but ?I think anything EOTP and then Brent and Peabody are both super long-shots OOB. To hedge your bet I'd put the citywide schools (Logan and SWS) highest, since your chances are as good as anyone elses, and then I'd move to the lesser-known DCPS schools: LT is a good PS option, JO Wilson, and Payne are also just fine Preschool options from what I understand, but I'd imagine there are many PS programs citywide that are acceptable whereas the upper grades may be a little less desireable. Barnard?

West would probably have slots. It's near us and I don't have anything bad to say about it. Maybe the open-classroom-thing, which I don't really like. It hasn't gotten the recent streak of applications some have.

My neice was in the three year old program at West and her family was very happy with the school and her teacher. I can see the open-classroom layout being a detractor but not a deal breaker.

YY doesn't have PS-3. Peabody has as many IB kids on waitlist as kids who got in so no chance there. I agree with Langdon and Burroughs as good possibilities. If memory serves (and I just looked at this this week because I have it all in a spreadsheet), they both had OOB kids get in in the initial lottery. Don't have the sheets in front of me at the moment.

PP here who was waitlisted for West. Next year, do check the stats on this year. It doesn't tell you full information, because some with long waitlists move a lot, others hardly at all (Barnard--eg--moved 2 slots only!). But its still worth looking at the numbers and how many IB and OOB/siblings get waitlisted.

West in our neighborhood (16th Street Heights) seems to be getting increasingly positive reviews on the neighborhood list-serv. I hear the same about Shepherd Elementary.

I live 10 blocks from West (but OOB) and was #30 on the WL for ps3 and so far, no call, so I'm not sure its so easy to get into. My IB school, Brightwood elementary, even had a waitlist, though probably it moved.

OP here. Thanks for the replies. I'm planning to apply to charters too, but with that I can apply to everything I like and see how the lotteries shake out. With the DCPS lottery, I don't want to "waste" one of my six slots on a school that isn't going to move any OOB kids off the waitlist.

Langdon could be good - it has good scores and is vaguely in your area. Burroughs as well. I'd check what locals say about those two, but their scores beat many others. Compare with Bancroft, for example.

You could consider Takoma EC.

Our inbound, Powell, has more inbounds students at PS-3 than ever before. Good for early childhood education, with Spanish.

Barnard could be near-impossible.

Maybe Thomson could work out downtown?

OP here. I live in northern Ward 5 (near the Ft. Totten metro) and work downtown, so I think there are probably a lot of schools that I could get to without going too far out of my way. None of the WOTP schools offer PS, right?

where do you live? it's not like you can apply everywhere, and that could help us offer suggestions.

It seems like the decent DCPS schools with PS-3 have gotten a lot of in-bound applicants. Are there any schools where OOB students might get off the waitlist that have strong early education programs and an overall positive school atmosphere? We're trying to sort out where to consider applying next year.
