Dogs live in the moment. Get him a new blanket and don't worry.

Get the new one and put it somewhere, they after a bit, switch the 2 of them. You can take the other one away and put it in a bag to start. If he starts to miss it (which you would notice), then you can always try to figure something out, like cutting a small piece of it to use somewhere.

I honestly don't think that he will care too much about the blanket being from old owners. To him, he would probably feel more abandonment from them than any love still. He might still like the blanket just because he is so used to it, or he might not even care if it is taken away.

You are so sweet to worry. He will love a new fleece pad from pet smart...look in the crate aisle. Take him with you on leash and let him pick out some new toys. You are a good person and your dog knows this too.

My dog (also a rescue, 4 years now) adjusts pretty easily to new things. Maybe since he is new to your home you can put two blankets in there for a while, and then when he clearly adjusts to the new one, you can take away the old ratty one.

How about getting a new one and putting it somewhere else, maybe on a dog bed or cushion to see how he likes it. If he takes to it, maybe take the old blanket out, wash it and store it in case he seems to miss it.

We adopted our dog at age 7 from a rescue organization. We don't know much about his history but do know that his most recent owners only kept him three months and their surrender papers to the pound stated they got him from a friend.
Anyway, he came to us with some of his own supplies, including a blanket in his crate that I presume came from one of his previous families. It is very old, ragged, embedded with dog hair that I can't get out, even after cleaning multiple times.
We have replaced the liner and crate cover, but have kept the blanket and he sleeps with it at night.

I'd kind of like to get him a new blanket, but haven't because I wonder if this blanket represents security to him. It also might be a reminder of families he has loved in the past.
We have replaced the liner and crate cover. Do you think he would miss his old blanket if we got him a new one?
