Greenbelt is the best bang for the money. There are good spacious apartments (you can get much larger for the same money than even Silver Spring or Rockville) that are a Metrobus away from either New Carrollton or Greenbelt Metros so you have a choice of orange line or green line. Apartments and condos on Hanover Parkway or townhouses in Ora Glen are affordable and easy walking distance to a shopping plaza that includes an updated Safeway and the metrobus stops.

promenade bethesda -- check craigslist or bulletin board in basement of the building

indoor pool and gym, bus to metro at the door.

Idylwood towers has 900 sqrft 1 bedroom with washer and dryer, metro bus stops in front of the building and takes you to the metro in one stop and utilities are included

A relative is moving back to the area - she has about $1500 to spend/month on rent or a mortgage. In mid-40s and single, no kids, so schools not an issue. I guess a one-bedroom or a nice big efficiency.
She would like to be able to commute downtown by public transport. Area must be safe. She is liberal but not very crunchy, has somewhat yuppie tastes (starbucks etc.)
What 'hoods would you recommend she focus on?
