I see people define themselves as this and it's not really clear what it means - since high school? 20+ years? 10+ years? I'm trying to figure out if I've hit the milestone because I just say I've been running for a long time. Not that I will say I am a lifelong runner - I just find it funny when someone says this. Maybe if I don't know what the definition is that means I am not one
How long have you been running?
20 years
I think you qualify.
To me, it's about your identity, which can be based on a number of different factors. I have always thought of myself as a jock while dh, who wasn't on a varsity team in high school (other than chess!), played lots of sports informally but didn't think of himself as an athlete. Now he's as physically active as I am (although not as consistent) and he still doesn't see himself as an athlete.
