I'm from South Jersey. My dad figured out a couple years ago that the spiky plant that's been thriving in the yard for the 30+ years they've had the house is a yucca.

Gladiola? they grow from corms (bulbs) planted in Spring.

I see a plant in my neighborhood that I'd like to put in my yard, but I don't know what it's called!
Information that might be useful to identify:
It's a perennial - I highly doubt the Taco Bell that has someone plant new plants every year, or the guy that rents out his house in my neighborhood plants something new when the house is empty
It starts as a "grassy" base, but the "blades" of grass are 2-3 inches wide and probably 12-18 inches long when at full size
THIS TIME OF YEAR - yes, right now - a tall stalk comes out of the grassy base. It will eventually have a line of white flowers, but only on the stalk. No flowers anywhere else. The stalk is probably as tall as I am (so five foot five).
Ideas? Or do you have one and there's some major downside I should know about? I've tried googling it, but without at least something more to start with I'm just getting catalogs of perennials where this plant is probably on page 22 of 23.
