If you're having this test, learn the freaking name! I get one every 6 months to a year for the same reason as OP, and it's a bit worrisome but overall no biggie. At some point most people return to normal and don't have to keep doing this (or they can lay off it for a while).

Colposcopy, folks! (One PP finally got it right!).

I had it for about two years, which meant 2x year paps and follow-up colposcopies when they came back abnormal. Eventually, I got tired of tracking it and had an ablasion to remove the abnormal cells. HPV can clear up on its own, and my OB gave me the choice, but the extra checkups were a hassle and it was easier to have it removed.

I had it for a few years and eventually went away.

I had this as well, 15 years ago, I had cryosurgery as well as colposcopy a year or 2 later.
Both were uncomfortable, but manageable.
I had to have Pap smears 4x a year at first, then went to once a year. I have had normal paps for over a decade and I am HPV free now.

I've had to do this 5 years in a row.

They do the HPV test on you and see if you test positive for one of the 8 strains that account for like 90% of all cervical cancer. For you, it sounds like this already happened and it came back positive.

When you test positive, the next step is the coloscopy. They look at your cervix, and if they see any cells that look abnormal, they biospy it to see what it is. If it's cancerous, they you have minor, out-patient surgery to have it removed.

It's not fun, but it's not anything scary either. Nothing has ever come back from my coloscopy's, even when my gyn has taken some cells for testing. Most women are able to rid their bodies naturally of HPV. For those of us with the high risk strains however, if we are unable to kick it, a yearly coloscopy just becomes routine.

Yes. They are doing the colonoscopy - however it is spelled.
I thought they only tested for the cancerous strains to begin with...

We do a biopsy and look at cervical under microscope... What does this mean?
