I have never had a professional job. I chose to start a business instead.

It really depends on your type of work. If you're a consultant (so hourly/project work), you can start as a side thing, and do it weekends/evenings until it becomes big enough for full-time.

If you want to launch the next great product (my case), you need to focus all hours on it so you can beat out any competition i.e. in a race for time.

We'll do over $1mln revenue this year, and profits (those go to me) will be $400-500k. I've been at this for about 10 years, and the first years were lean, but it's finally paying off.

Wahts the product?

Built up a small clientele base p/t, then when job ended just dove into it full force.

How did you get started? Quit your job and take a leap of faith? Keep your day job and build your business slowly on nights and weekends? Other?
I have some good credentials in my field (advanced degree, publications, conference presentations) though I think I still need to work on building my reputation. I can't afford to quit my day job (which has nothing whatsoever to do with my area of expertise - relocated and had to take it for a paycheck - so no concerns about non-competes, etc) but it's not helping me get any closer to my professional goals either. I'm thinking about starting my own company on the side and building slowly, but I'm having trouble envisioning how that might work. I'm eager to hear from anyone who has btdt. Any lessons learned or good advice to share? Any regrets?
