i like them both. no need to give them the formal, long names if you want the shorter version to be their names. cate seems more modern.

When short for Catherine it's just a nickname. Many people with this name eventually get called Cat or kitty many other variants. There's not right spelling of a nickname. At heart her name is Catherine or Katherine Etc. that is how nicknames work.

My DD is Kate..not short for anything. I love the name. Since that is what we wanted her to be called, that is what we named her. She loves it too. We did not consider Cate.

+1

Just do Catherine, call her Kate. I dislike nicknames being used as standalone names. Just don't name the poor little dear "Cate." It's a slippery slope from "Cate" to "Cait" to "Chayt" to "Larla."

I like Cate better. More current, but it sounds the same as Kate when roll is called at school, etc if you are worried about it being popular.

Cate is short for Catherine. Kate is short for Katherine. Don't use it as a short name use it as a nickname.

OP here. Yes, as a first name along the lines of Jack instead of John.

Is it short for Katharine? Are you just using Kate as a stand alone name? I don't like that idea, but if I had to choose one I would use Cate, because it is not as common.

Isn't Kate short for Kathryn or Katherine and Cate is short for Caitlyn or Catherine?

If you were using Kate or Cate as a first name, which would you choose and why?
