I actually like giving out cash but always end up doing a target gift card because I wasn't sure it was proper etiquette to give cash.. How do teacher's feel about getting cash?

OP here. Thank you--I suspected as much but didn't know if I should stick to tradition, which is why I posted this question.

No kidding! I can see saying "I get too many of those," but "not useful"--really?

I usually give B&N gift cards or Starbucks. But today I've learned that those are the less desirable ones. Good to know.

I know for a fact that our teachers buy some of their own books for the classroom, so a Barnes & Noble gift card would be quite useful.

Ok but let the gift be for the actual teacher, not his or her class. Donate books to the class or hold a book drive for the class. Actually doing something for the teacher, making it personal, is nice.

If it's a gift card or paper of some sort, last day is fine. If it's a dreaded mug, then any day BEFORE the last day as there will be much stuff to take home I don't need any more.

I know we have both teachers and former teachers on this list--please weigh in:

Do you prefer cards and gifts to be given on the last day of school or during the class party, which in our case is the week before? For all the kids' teachers, I'm giving a card and a Barnes & Noble gift card, so it's not a heavy load to bring home. But just wondering what is easiest for you.
