Get the gloves. I work in the ER, and I get more people coming in with mandolin accidents than anything else.

I'm one of those people, though I've never gone to the ER. Passed out once and the rest have been bleeders that eventually stopped. Hubby bought me a Victorinox cut proof glove from amazon. Not bulky (I can still use my chefs night at the same speed), no problem holding the food, and I'm cut free ever since.

I got a big, expensive metal one as a wedding present. Unless I'm making a big quantity, it's a pain. That OXO one is nice. I've used it at my mom's house and it works just as well as my fancy one.

The handheld OXO one is amazing. We have a huge countertop monstrosity that we never use but use the OXO all the time.

I want to give one a try but I'm not ready to make a huge investment yet. Suggestions for a mid-range one -- that actually works? Thanks!
