The physical building of Waples Mill is unable to expand and no more trailers can be added because of septic/sewer issues. I'm no expert in that area, so I can't add any details, but that is what I've been told.

Yes, Waples has high-income families who should be capable of lobbying as needed. Lack of capacity seems to be at the root of many non-ideal solutions and compromises in FCPS.

Back to Navy - Does anyone know how many Crossfielders are thinking of sending 3rd graders to Navy?

I think I read that Waples Mills doesn't have the capacity to have kids stay for local level IV. For space they are counting on shipping out a certain number of kids each year.

Perhaps MW could form a separate third grade class for those students who were in pool but not found eligible, and any others recommended by teachers as being advanced. It seems this would help with differentiation, versus having the in pool kids spread across all the gen ed classes.

That's too bad for WM and MW kids. Both groups are getting short changed, IMO. Every school should have LLIV - it just doesn't seem fair that some kids get the option - to have been in the pool and not found eligible and still get full time LLIV services. Whereas, the WM and MW kids are in gen. ed and get very limited L III service or if fortunate, are in the center, and for the WM kids it is a long bus ride! I hope Dr. Z or his staff reads this post and makes a change to have LLIV in the other 2 (MW and WM) elem. schools in the Oakton pyramid are being shot changed, big time. This is your district - let's get a just change in place and make the educational offerings in the Oakton pyramid fair and just for all the students, not only those at Crossfields, Navy and Oakton ES.

Sorry, that was a typo. You are right-- MWES is a center, not LLIV. What I meant was that Waples is the only school that doesn't offer Level IV services (either center or LLIV), so Waples kids are the only ones that have to choose to leave their base school (and go on a very long bus ride-- currently to HW, next year likely MW) to receive level IV.

As for MW becoming a LLIV, I doubt that will happen because it is the only school in the Oakton pyramid with enough capacity to house the Waples Mill kids, even though Waples does not want MW as a center simply because it is too far.

One more thing...I hope MWES eliminates the center and goes LLIV only, it would be better for those kids that have the potential but were overlooked by the selection cmte.

The memo that Dr. Zuluaga presented to the Board in January specifically said that they created a center at Navy, even though Navy has limited space for a center, because they are going to simultaneously strengthen the LLIV at Crossfield so that, in time, very few Crossfield families will choose the center at Navy over the LLIV at Crossfield. Dr. Z further explained that the reason Waples Mill was not included in the center at Navy was because, since Waples will never have a LLIV option, there would not be enough room for Waples kids at Navy. So, even though Navy is a center in name, it may be a LLIV in spirit.

So, to answer your question, yes, at least in the Oakton pyramid, with the exception of Waples, they are trying to eliminate centers. All other schools in the Oakton pyramid- Mosby Woods, Oakton ES, Navy, and Crossfield- have the option of staying local to receive LLIV services.

The presentation for the new center was last week. I was surprised that only 2 schools go to this center - Navy and Crossfield and Crossfield has it's own local level IV. Is this a way to eliminate centers? By giving all the schools local level IV?
