If I could ask, how selective were the schools doing the rescinding?

My understanding is that the grades would have to be pretty bad, not just a string of Bs. Some colleges may ask DC to write a letter explaining the grades.

I know of recruited athletes who lost offers because their grades tanked.

No but every admission letter usually states acceptance is contingent on final grades.
