We found Tom Comway from this recommendation. We did one overall "check up" with him and be reviewed our entire financial picture and made specific recommendations. We payed about $2000 I think. Really worth it for the peace of mind it bought us.

Hello Mr. Comway.
You really think someone would pay 2000 dollars for your "financial advise"? I can give you some financial advise for 200 dollars.
Good luck fishing!

That was my rec and I spelled his name wrong. It's Conway. Our net worth is about $5M so additional services probably added to the bill. I managed our money for many many years (obviously successfully) but we thought it was time to get some professional advice. No need to disparage the FA I recommended. Isn't this the money forum?

I tend to agree with 9:41, although sometimes it's helpful to have someone else give you a kick in the pants to get organized, or to make the calculations or whatever, but the trick is not to pay too much.

I've twice done consultations with FAs-- once we paid about $700 and the only really useful thing that came out of it was they had us do a detailed cash flow (all income and spending) before we even met. The other time we paid about $200 and we got some confirmation on what we were thinking and some minor helpful tips.

I find the CNN/Money personal finance site to be pretty helpful (esp. the Money 101 series if you need to know about a topic like life insurance), bogleheads is pretty useful, but not everyone over there knows what they are talking about.

You really don't need one, IMO. If you're middle class and reasonably intelligent, you can figure out what you need to do pretty easily. Go online or ask specific questions on message boards (even this one). It's easy enough.

DH and I would like to consult a financial advisor but we're not sure how to identify someone who knows their stuff. Any recommendations? We are not wealthy - just a middle class family trying to ensure that we are covering our basis from a retirement goals and college savings perspective. Someone in MoCo or DC would be ideal. Thank you!
