PPs

I'm the PP who got hers on Friday evening. I had my period a week ago. My OB said I would have some spotting after insertion, and I did on Saturday, but today and late last night I have been soaking tampons continuously. Is this a period, or bleeding from the procedure? Idk I don't want to freak out, but the cramps have been ridiculous already!

Did you bleed for a long time after insertion?

Just got my first period after paraguard. Definitely heavier bleeding than before but no cramps at all. I never really had cramps before, so maybe that is related.

My period with para guard slowed down after 6 mo. Still, it has never been more than 5 days. Pp incorrect, 20 day period is never normal. I am on my 3rd para guard, btw. All in all have had for 8 yrs with a couple breaks for pregnancy.

I had cramping and heavy periods after paragard was inserted too. After six months or so, it got better, but a year out, I am still using a higher absorbency tampon but not changing as often as initially. Now I am getting breakthrough bleeding as well. The cramps are mostly gone.

My periods with Paragard were similar. I had spotting for 2-3 days before I would start and pretty heavy bleeding for 2-3 of the 5 day cycle. It wasn't horrible, but I knew every month I would have about 1 1/2 days with the heating pad and some ibuprofen. I managed to keep it for 7 yrs because my body was never more regular than when I was hormone free.

It has been getting better over time. Had it for 7 months now. At first very heavy flow, plus excruciating cramps. Now, flow has lightened quite a bit. Still experience way more cramps. Also cramping at ovulation with break-through bleeding then (that never happened before).

Each period has shown some improvement so I've stuck with it. If it had continued like in the beginning, I would have had to have it out.

On the plus side, I like not having to worry about it. Also, being hormone-free I feel better and have suffered far fewer migraines.

PP, if you are still around, can you tell me a bit more about your experiences with migraine and Paraguard? I have chronic migraine and am considering Paraguard because it is hormone-free, but I am a little scared about the heavy periods since I already have heavy periods. Did it impact your number of migraines significantly? thanks.

PP,
I'm the one who just got it yesterday. My OB didn't tell me that. She said the period may be heavier but god one week NOT bleeding that sounds horrific. Do you have any concerns with Mirena? The opposite occurs with that right?...your period may disappear?

I'm about to have my Paragaurd taken out. After 1 year my periods are so heavy and long that now I only am NOT bleeding for one week and bleeding for 3.

My doctor says this is pretty "normal" with Paraguard (why the hell didn't you tell me before). I'm switching to Merina, or whatever it's called next month.

I've had mine for 2.5 years and it has gotten better. I also find that when I work out regularly my periods are much lighter.

IME it took about a year to calm down from this stage, then my periods got shorter. Every period did get better. By the end I'd still have a "heavy day" but not one of those "terrible cramps, soak through a super tampon and large pad in 2 hours" days like you're having now--just a normal heavy day, which I could plan for. I had my paragard for 12.5 years.

I just got Paragard yesterday. And was wondering the same thing. Do you also experience spotting when you are not on your period?

I don't have PAragard but I do get heavy periods. I've found that taking Advil right before and during my period makes it lighter. You could try it.

I have experienced this with Paragard too.

My mother had this problems years ago and had to have it removed.

Hopefully other posters will weigh in with more current solutions.

I had a Paragard IUD fitted in December. Since then my periods have been extremely heavy. They last 8 days or more (currently on day 7 and expect this one to last at least another 4 days due to volume of current bleeding) and always include 2-3 days or bleeding that is so heavy that it soaks through two different forms of super heavy protection within 1-2 hours.

Has anyone else experienced this? Will it settle down soon or is something wrong? (I've been assuming it was due to the paragard and that once my body got used to it it would improve).
