Ignore that person. Snarky responding on DCUM is the only hobby for some, you'll see. Of course there are Target, Costco stores here. I don't find DCUM to be truly representative of the area, but definitely of one subculture of it. Not every person feels the need to claim superiority over other parts of the country.

I love it here, I moved here when I was in my early 20s, have made great friends who continue to be friends through marriages (divorces) and children coming into the picture. I wish my family were here and that fact may have me eventually moving to a different city eventually to be close to them.

Winters are pretty mild but your first winter will probably be LONG for you. Although, my grandparents are in FL and I guess you have been having colder winters recently anyway

So they don't maintain your base salary to the new place you are relocating? They just cut it down to the cost of living of the place that you are transferring to?

What about the benefits? I've heard fed employees benefits are way better (in the long run) than private sector

I'd stay where you are. Once you are in DC it is hard to leave because you generally take a salary cut. We came from California (a forced transfer) and now we are looking to move back, but the job options are VERY limited and we'd both take a huge paycut.

I did notice the housing cost per square foot. It is expensive! I actually thought FL errands and shopping are way more convenient here. I can get to a Walmart in about 15 minutes or less. Again, i don't know DC that well.

I really like the professional level of the DC area which is more suitable for both of us. FL is mostly retired people, park employees and tourists as well.

The commute to my work is another reason to think about. Right now I can use my own vehicle and get to my final destination in about 35 minutes with minor traffic delays. Living on DC would require to use the metro which I know is very crowded by locals and tourists.

And about the weather.... Well, that a no brainier, if this decision would be made weather wise only FL would be the option but sometimes you have to sacrifice some to get other benefits

Yes, I should have noted that housing is probably 2x or 3x more expensive here.

and minus the cuban culture here (to compare, which is a loss in a sense). it's very white/korean/indian/arab here.

OP it might help if you gave us a bit more info. about where you live and what you are expecting. DC is an urban area with a lot of traffic and high cost of living, which stresses some people out, but it's also got some great opportunities, museums and other benefits of urban life.

It will take years to adjust. I am local here but lived in Miami for 3 years and it must've taken me 10 years to not hate it here.

That being said, that positive is that there is no place on the east coast I would rather be other than northern VA or Florida. Here it's sort of like south florida minus the great weather, palm trees, and nite life. Also, errands and shopping are so much more convenient here. And the schools are great and crime is very low. Also, most of the locals here are very educated and professional.

So my husband got a job offer from the Fed gov. We need to relocate from FL to the area (relocation expenses are not covered). We are currently employed in the area with fair salaries (professional level). We have a 8 months baby. Should we move? Is DC, VA, a family friendly place?
