Is not a myth, it's accounting. The endowments are so huge they can not justify being subsidized anymore. Legally and for tax purposes they are considers Independent.

I know the word Independent makes some feel special/elite but the fact is some Independent schools (many Catholic) and apparently many Jewish schools are NOT $35k.

Makes you wonder why so many are $35K.

Quaker local meetings (and yearly meetings) don't generally subsidize the schools.

The Jewish schools are much cheaper, $20k is high end (although the upper school might be higher) and the orthodox ones are $10-17k, but they all have very generous financial aid packages and have a policy against letting finances be a bar to a Jewish education.

A dictionary would be convenient right now. "Independent" refers to the fact that they get no money from any associated church or synagogue.

Most religious schools are actually Independent. The Episcopal schools seem to be in this price range.

And, isn't Sidwell a Quaker school? So at least 3 of the so-called Big 3, 5, whatever are religious schools that charge enormous sums of money.

The only religious based schools I know that have tuitions that high are not attached to a church or community that gives them financial support. In that case they are no different from any other private school. Likely they also do not have a big number, if any, clergy members on faculty so their expenses are just as high as other schools.

Really? Seems like these schools are just happy to create elitism and crowd out middle and lower income families from attending. Why doesn't anyone talk about this?
