McLean, Langley, Vienna, Great Falls, Burke.

Parts of Falls Church too - check 22043 and 22046.

Maybe Fairfax too.

Glad you're happy at GBW. A lot of other gen Ed parents complain, particularly at Haycock.

These are the schools which often participated and received awards.

That's because they are AAP centers. If your child is not in AAP, some people prefer a school that is not a center.

that may be, but my child hasn't even reached AAP age (and I don't know that she will qualify, either), and we are quite happy with GBW. I think it helps that it is very much a neighborhood school, even with the AAP center housed there. It has a community/family feel to it, even with 1000 students.

And the AAP Centers have skewed SOL test results, and test scores are the basis for the GreatSchools numerical ratings.

Great PTA and great schools - 20124. Your kids are safe, the schools are not crowded and the parents are involved.

The kids at the top schools don't need that many drills to do well on SOLs. I'd be more worried about the schools that teach to the test and still fall short.

If you go to http://www.greatschools.net.

8s are good but 9s or 10s are even better.

Says who?

OP, what are you looking for out of a particular school. Many of those 9's and 10's are notorious for "teaching to the test." Is that what you want? Or do you want a teacher who is willing to go off script a bit? I'm not saying that you can't find great teachers at 9/10's but you certainly shouldn't limit yourself to those at the expense of other practical considerations such as, housing budget & commute.

That's stupid, you can view that all of the 9s and 10s are top rated schools. I am not sure about the teaching to Test BS you speak of.

We are looking for a new house and I'm not sure where to begin looking. Can anyone help me with which zipcodes I should be looking at. We will need to have good middle school/high schools as well but I'm assuming that those would be equally rated. Our kids are elementary age.
