I'm wearing my fully loaded $40 glasses right now. My cheap ones were $13you and DH's were $6.95. He measured my pupillary distance and they are perfect.

You can do PD with a ruler or a walk-in place and order from Warby Parker, and they have them to you within 10 days. For 100 bucks, not sure you can beat that.

Is an optometrist's fitting necessary for single vision glasses?

I just got a pair from Warby Parker, and I love them. They have lots of styles that would work for a teen. As a 37 yo SAHM, I had a harder time finding a pair that wasn't too hipster. Service was great and they're every bit as nice as my $700 pair from the ridiculously overpriced optometrist.

Pupillary distance is not hard to measure. We just did it with a ruler, or I think that little paper printout from the website.

We had a really good experience with zenni optical. We got DH glasses for $37 and he's been using them for almost 3 years!

Glasses can be incredibly expensive. I've been dying to try Warby Parker, an on-line glasses company, but can't because I need bifocals. However, it seems much less expensive and the frames are pretty hip, which would be important to a teen. Apparently, you pick a few frames that you like, have them send them to you and then you tell them what you want to order. I guess it's like Zappos for glasses.
